i cancelled my account years ago. They said the words on the phone "your account is cancelled." An automatic fee was placed on my account after, which reopened my account without my approval or consent. It has now been in collections for years because every time i dispute it, i need written proof my account was cancelled. HSBC refuses to talk to me. And the collection agencies just sell the debit to someone else and the cycle starts all over again.
